For commuting in town and for the transport of items that do not fit on my bike I built a bike trailer similar to the BOB trailer. This article gives an overview over the results achieved.
During my basic studies at the University of Rostock as a mechanical engineeri the main focus was placed on theoretical knowledge. While this is necessary to understand the more advanced or practical aspects of mechanical engineering and naval architecture I missed the application of the knowledge learned a bit. So in 1997 I started my own little project…. a bike trailer similar to the well known BOB trailer.
The trailer is build out of chrome-molybdenum-tubes with a diameter of 10 mm and a thicknetss of just 1 mm. This yields a very light albeit strong frame. Technical drawing are available as Autocad files.
A complete documentation with strength calculations, usage scenarios and an evaluation of possible technical solutionsi can be downloaded as postscript or latex) files.
Currently I do not use the trailer any more. For touring I still prefer the classic setup with paniers and a handlebar bag. In town I live close enough to all major shopping facilites for walking.
